SPF Edit is an independent magazine edit about staying sun-safe outdoors. We cover the gear around sunscreen — shade, clothing, hats and eyewear — with short seasonal deks and sourced specs.

How we research

We are upfront about this: we have not bench-tested the products on this site. Our guides rest on three things.

• Manufacturer spec sheets. Key specs come from each maker's own product page. Each product card links to that page and shows the date we checked it.
• Arithmetic you can check. When we compare sizes or weights, we use the maker's numbers and show the units.
• Public safety guidance. Sun safety guidance comes from the EPA, FDA and American Academy of Dermatology. Nothing here is medical advice.

When a maker's own figure sounds optimistic, we label it as the maker's figure.
