The picks

01

★Best for groups

Shibumi ShadeClassic with Quiet Canopy

Best for: Big groups on breezy beaches

A wind-held canopy that Shibumi says covers 150 sq ft and weighs about 4 lb, with UPF 50+ fabric and a 26 x 5 in carry bag.

What we like

  • Largest shade area here
  • Light for its size

Watch out for

  • Depends on wind to hold the canopy up
  • Highest price here

Shibumi says the Classic covers 150 sq ft and packs into a 26 x 5 in bag. The page gives the weight as “less than 4 lbs” and “only 4 lbs”. It also gives capacity two ways: up to 8 people, and best for groups of 3 to 6. The canopy is UPF 50+ and Shibumi says one person can set it up in under 3 minutes. It needs a breeze to stay up.

02

★Best without wind

NesoGrande

Best for: Families on calm or windy beaches

A 9 x 9 ft nylon and Lycra shade held by two aluminum poles and four sand-filled anchor bags, rated UPF 50+, at 6.5 lb.

What we like

  • No wind needed
  • Water resistant fabric

Watch out for

  • Heaviest pick here
  • Anchor bags need filling with sand

The Grande is a 9 x 9 ft sheet of nylon and Lycra stretched over two aluminum poles and held down by four sand anchor bags. Neso lists 6.5 lb, UPF 50+ and water resistant fabric. Its product page lists the poles at 6 ft 10 in, and its comparison page lists 6 ft 11 in. Capacity also appears as 3 to 6 in one place and 2 to 4 in another.

03

★Best budget pick

ColemanSkyshade Large Compact Beach Shade

Best for: Couples on a budget

A two-person shelter with pre-attached poles, an extended floor and roof, UPF 50+ fabric, 7 stakes and 3 sandbags, listed at 4 lb.

What we like

  • Lowest price here ($59.99 list)
  • Floor keeps sand off
  • Gear pockets

Watch out for

  • Fits only 2
  • Listed as final sale on Coleman.com

Coleman’s shelter measures 6.8 x 7.5 x 4.5 ft and fits two. It has pre-attached poles, a 2.1 ft extended floor, 7 stakes and 3 sandbags, and UPF 50+ UV Guard fabric. Coleman lists 4 lb in the description and 4.53 lb in the spec table. List price was $59.99 with a 1-year limited warranty.

How to choose

  • Group size: for more than four people, the Shibumi has the most shade area by far.
  • Wind: on still days the Shibumi may sag. The Neso and Coleman do not rely on wind.
  • Carry distance: all three are 6.5 lb or less, per the makers.
  • Shade is only part of it: check the UV Index and pair shade with sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. See our UV Index guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does UPF 50+ mean I can skip sunscreen in the shade?

No. Shade cuts direct sun. Sand and water reflect UV. The EPA advises shade plus broad spectrum SPF 15+ sunscreen, clothing, a hat and sunglasses when the UV Index is 3 or higher.

What if there is no wind?

Shibumi's canopy is held up by wind, and Shibumi includes a Wind Assist accessory. The Neso Grande uses sand-filled anchor bags and poles, and the Coleman uses poles, stakes and sandbags, so neither needs wind.

Which is lightest?

Shibumi lists about 4 lb. Coleman lists 4 lb in its description and 4.53 lb in its spec table. Neso lists 6.5 lb.
